The death of this teen happened yesterday a couple blocks from our house.

The sad part is, his parents probably snuck into the country from Mexico to create a better life for him.

But they didn't anticipate that the streets would eat him alive.

Here's an excerpt:

Chavez, a reputed La Raza street gang member, had taken his uncle's 1997 GMC Safari van without permission and was riding around with two fellow gang members when they ventured into the territory of a rival gang, Kubiak said.

"Shots were fired at the van, and the 14-year-old sped though a stop sign at the intersection and was struck by another van," causing Chavez's van to flip on its side, Kubiak said.

Chavez, who had been struck in the back of the head by the gunfire, was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 2:31 a.m. today, according to the medical examiner's office.

The teen's friends were not hit and did not suffer any serious injuries in the crash, Kubiak said.

Inside the 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette that collided with the Safari were a 25-year-old woman and two children, ages 1 and 5, Kubiak said. They were all taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
