Today some gangbangers opened the fire hydrant across the street from our house. Instantly the entire neighborhood was out in the street, shoes and bikes strewn everywhere, and everyone soaked, kids of all ages running everywhere.

When the fire department comes by and opens the fire hydrant for the kids, they usually open it about halfway to let enough water for everyone to play in. However, when gangbangers open the hydrant, they really open it all the way. The pillar of water reaches all the way across the street and floods the front yards on the other side. Somehow I don't think the water department would approve, but the police drove by a number of times, leisurly watching the fun and moving on.

If you stand behind an open fire hydrant and reach around the front, blocking the opening with your arms, the water shoots upward in a huge arc. Some of the kids get so good at it they can aim backwards and hit people behind them with the jet stream. Abi and I ran in front of the jetstream a couple times, but the force of the water was a bit too scary for her.
