Well, on Saturday (Sept 1) hols and i are moving to Brighton Park, a neighborhood in Chicago, southwest side. 3835 South Sacramento. Stay tuned for more info. Looks like I may have to change my isp as well because RCN doesn't cover the area.
click here and here and here for info on our new neighborhood. a lot of the info is from 1996, so it is somewhat outdated, but that is typical for anything you find on the web about the south side of chicago (and 3800 is hardly even south, it is more like "mid"). if you go searching for apartments and info on the web it is almost as if the south side of chicago didn't exist (with the exception of areas bordering universities and hospitals). If you ask people (at least people around where we live in the north loop, or people from other cities in illinois and indiana) about the south side, you get the impression that it is a large, dark expanse of gang infested, crime-ridden neighborhoods. strange. with all the talk about multiculturalism, valuing cultural diversity, and celebrating the rich and varied ethnic makeup of this city, it seems that people would take more interest in an area of such a rich and diverse cultural heritage. seems to me what many people really mean by "celebrate cultural diversity" is they want to celebrate the facets of the various cultures only if they can be filtered and edited enough to be acceptable to a "progressive," "forward thinking," university educated mindset. A sort of "new tribalism," as I've heard it called. A comfortable blend of the easily digestable parts of different cultures.
