Its comforting to me that in Jesus' inner circle were two men politically diametrically opposed to one another. All of his disciples loved him but they disagreed on politics. This sounds like my family. We have every party represented with the committment of the zealots, yet we all agree that we love Jesus. My hope is that we'll continue to love one another and not let minors be majors.
Comments:
we were talking about this, how diametrically opposed levi and simon the zealot must have been. and for simon especially, his political views were radically religious (like many left wing social action christians, or many right wing christian republicans). It must have been difficult for him to realize that Jesus didn't think his pseudoreligious political views were very important at all, but that the kingdom Jesus was setting up involved totally different values than his political-religious pet issues and ideology. It would have been even more difficult to realize that Jesus was calling him to work closely with, and on the same team with, Levi, who as a tax collector would have been considered a puppet of the Romans.
I can easily get caught up and impassioned about anything so yeah i do get off balance. Oh to be a phlegmatic!
